Frequently Asked Questions

Recently, we had some communication with one of our sales agents about competition with a light scatter instrument. Here is a copy of what I said in reply to a customer who was trying to buy on price alone. The application is for an oil production facility that uses sea water to cool machinery lubricating oil and the customer wants to protect the environment and his liability by continuously monitoring for leaking oil into the cooling water.

Your customer needs to understand that the low price instruments use the principle of light scatter.

Here are the main flaws in light scatter systems:

1. These instruments cannot differentiate between suspended solids and droplets of oil - no matter what the sellers say about dual beams, special circuits, etc. This application is for oil in seawater. Just imagine how much suspended material is in raw sea water!!! The biggest market for the these instruments is the shipping industry and they absolutely do not measure oil. In fact most shipping companies including our nations navies, do not believe their oil in water instrument readings.

2. Light scatter instruments cannot see oil droplets that are smaller than about 10 - 20 microns. This means that if the oil is finely dispersed or emulsified or dissolved, then the instrument will not see it. The TD-4100 and XD monitor for all the oil. The best example is the capability of our instruments to monitor from very low ppb to over 2000ppm.

3. These instruments cannot detect low concentrations of oil in any application. The limit of detection is 5 - 15 ppm depending on the application. The accuracy specification they build to is plus or minus 5 ppm!! Does this make sense? The TD-4100 and XD can monitor oil in seawater at 50 ppb or below!!! This is 2 orders of magnitude lower detection limit.

4. These instruments are in constant contact with the water. The flow cell is always in contact with the water and therefore is constantly fouling. No matter what these companies have tried to do to mechanically or chemically clean the flow cell, they always fail!!!

That is why TD is replacing these kinds of instruments in any application where the measurement of oil in water is taken seriously!!! Do you think the Dubai Water treatment plant would use a light scatter instrument to protect their system? No, they bought 3 instruments at over 6 times the cost, because ours works and the others do not.

Customers who are serious about monitoring oil in water chose Turner Designs Fluorescence instruments.

HOT NEWS!

New Hand Held Oil in Water Meter for Produced Water and Crude Oil in Water

Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments (USA) announces the next generation rugged and reliable oil field oil in water monitors for crude oil and produced water applications. The industry leader who brought you the TD-360 FastHEX and the TD-4100 XD continuous on-line oil in water monitors has just released the TD-500 TM hand held / bench top oil in water meter for crude oil. The new UV Fluorescence meter measures oil in Produced Water, Desalter Tail-Water, Crude Storage Tank Water, and in any application where crude oil may be in contact with water. It is viable for all crude oil and most gas production condensates.

It uses the same easy-to-use FastHEX procedure used on the famous TD-360 with the same high accuracy and repeatability but the new TD-500 meter is half the price of the nearest competition. The analysis method is compatible with all popular solvents including hexane, Vertrel, AK-225, Freon, xylene, and others.

The TD-500 is powered by 4 AAA batteries, weighs less than 1 pound and produces oil in water measurements in less than 4 minutes. It requires no special training and measurements correlate to EPA standard oil and grease laboratory methods. It is completely sealed meeting IP 67 Standard. It is water-proof, dust-proof and corrosion-proof and carries the CE mark.
